Appreciation post: Old timer corrected my preheat method on a big job
I was working on a 2000 gallon tank down in Baton Rouge last month and this old timer told me I was starting my preheat too fast and cracking the welds. He showed me how to feather the torch over a longer 10 minute warm up instead of blasting it. Has anyone else had a mentor save them from a bad habit they didn't even know they had?

Man that's such a solid lesson. I feel like in so many things we try to rush the prep and then wonder why everything goes sideways later.

@barbara967 what do you think is the main thing people mess up during prep? Is it not having the right tools, or trying to skip steps, or something else? I find myself getting impatient with the small stuff and then paying for it later when something breaks for no reason. The people who are really good at things always seem to take forever getting ready, but then their results are way smoother.
