A 30 year hand told me to slow my travel speed on vertical up, and he was right

Was running 6010 root on a 2 inch nozzle in Gary, Indiana last Tuesday and he said 'you're racing the puddle, let it wet in' so I dropped my travel speed maybe 15 percent and the toes laid down flat. Any of you guys got a rule of thumb for travel speed on vert up or is it just feel?
