Update: Our game group's 'no phones' rule is causing more problems than it solves

Three years ago, our group in Portland started a strict rule where phones go in a basket during game nights. Last month, a player missed an urgent text about a family issue for over an hour because of it. Just last week, another friend needed to quickly check a bus schedule for their ride home and it became a whole awkward thing. I get the intent, but in my experience, it assumes the worst of people and creates real hassles. Has anyone else found a better middle ground for managing distractions without a total ban?

Yeah, that "assumes the worst of people" part really hits home.

Sounds like that basket is a real life support system for emergencies. Maybe try a "vibrate on the table" rule so people can step out if it's important. Total bans just make normal life stuff weird.
