The guy at my game store told me to play my heaviest game first, and it fixed our whole group
Our Thursday group kept dying at 9pm, everyone yawning through the last hour of whatever we were playing. Six of us, ages 29 to 51, and the two guys with kids always looked wrecked by the end. Then the owner of my shop in Sacramento, Dave, watched us set up a light card game at 6pm and said we had it backwards. He told us to put the big brain burner out first while everyone was fresh, then slide into the easy stuff when our heads got fried. Sounded stupid but we tried it. We ran a 3 hour heavy game starting at 6:30, and by 9:30 we were laughing through a party game and nobody checked the clock once. Three weeks now and we have not had a single person bail early. The weird part is we finish more games per night than we did before. So what is your group's order, heavy first or do you save the crunchy one for last?
Dave is a smart guy for a game store owner but this sounds like basic stuff dressed up as wisdom. Of course you play the game that needs your full brain when your brain is still on. The part that makes me doubt the whole thing is the idea that switching games gets you more games played. If you spent three hours on one heavy game at 6:30, you already gave up a third of your night to it. Six people not bailing for three weeks in a row could just mean the group is having a good stretch.
