Our game group argued for months about house rules for Catan, but after one night with the official tournament variant from the 2019 World Championship I saw the light.

The base game felt broken with 4 players since someone always got blocked in, but that streamlined trading rule and balanced resource layout kept everyone engaged for the full 90 minutes, so has anyone else tried using competitive league rules for casual sessions?

Yeah we switched to the 2019 trade rules about six months ago and it fixed the worst parts of 4 player games, just make sure everyone knows the reroll rule for first settlements so nobody gets stuck on a 2 and 12.

Oh man, I've been through that exact mess with the 2 and 12 blocking. My group started using the reroll rule for first settlements too and it makes a huge difference. I'll echo what @morgan.nancy said about the 2019 trade rules that helped with 4 player games the most since you can't get totally stuck with no good trades. Just make sure to remind everyone about the reroll rule before the game starts, saves a lot of frustration late game.
