My gaming group's rule zero change backfired hard

Our DM let someone house-rule flanking into D&D 5e for a quick combat fix, said it would speed things up. Three sessions later every fight was a conga line of advantage hits and it killed the tension, we ended up dumping it after a TPK in Saltmarsh. Has anyone else had a 'helpful' house rule that made things worse before you cut it?
