I used to think you had to win to have fun at board game nights. Then a guy at a cafe in Austin just kept laughing when I blocked his best move.

Totally get that. My group used to be super competitive until we tried a co-op game like Pandemic. Watching everyone scramble to stop outbreaks together, even when we lost, was way more fun than just one person winning. It changed the whole vibe.

Read an article once about how losing can actually help you learn a game faster. That guy laughing in Austin gets it, it's about the play, not the points. Grace_chen is right about co-op games changing the vibe, too. Forced my own game group to try one and now we argue about strategy instead of who's winning. Takes the pressure off.
