Got told my dungeon tiles looked like wet cardboard, fixed my wash technique

Some guy at a convention in Denver looked at my hand-painted tiles and said they just looked like I'd dipped them in brown water. He was right, I was using way too much water in my wash and not letting layers dry. I cut my wash ratio to 1:8 paint to water and now the detail actually pops. Has anyone else had a random stranger give them a tip that actually fixed a problem?

Cracked up reading this cause I literally had the same thing happen with my terrain tiles at a show in Portland. Some guy just goes "looks like you painted them with coffee" and walked off. Hurt my feelings but he was dead right, I was doing the same watery mess you described. Switched to a 1:10 ratio with some flow aid and now the cracks in my cobblestone actually look like cracks instead of sad brown puddles.

Looks like you painted them with coffee" is brutal but honestly I'd rather get that than the silent pity nods I usually get. Maybe I need to go find a mean stranger to critique my washes, cheaper than a workshop.
