Rain date chaos taught me to plan for the backup plan

Last month our block party got hit with a surprise storm, the kind they didn't warn about until 4pm. We had 60 people signed up, all the food was prepped, and the bounce house was already inflated. Panic mode. I ran to the nearest hardware store and grabbed two 20x20 tarps plus rope, strung them between trees in the cul-de-sac. We crammed the grill under one and the dessert table under the other. It worked, but barely. Next year I'm booking a tent rental before I even send out the flyers. Anyone else had a rain plan fail this badly, or do you guys actually schedule a backup weekend upfront?
