Strict app timers never worked for me, but one weird trick did: a 90-day phone swap to a flip phone
Everyone swears by app timers and site blockers, but after 3 months of fighting notifications I realized those tools just made me sneakier, not less distracted. Swapping my smartphone for a $30 flip phone for 90 days cut my screen time from 5 hours a day to 40 minutes, and the hard limit of a basic phone did more than any timer app ever could. Has anyone else tried going cold turkey on the hardware side instead of stacking 6 blocker apps?
There's a pattern here that shows up everywhere: we keep trying to fix things with more software when the real answer is often less. Think about how people try to eat better by downloading tracking apps, then end up just gaming the numbers. Or how a lock on the fridge works better than a meal plan. When the fix lives in the same device that distracts you, it's like asking the fox to guard the henhouse. I've started to think that adding tools for self control is usually a sign that we need to change the setup itself, not stack more apps on top of it.
