My niece looked at my phone timer and asked why I didn't just use the app

I was showing her how I set a kitchen timer for 25 minutes to clean one room at a time. She just shook her head and said there's an app that does that with rewards and streaks and whatnot. I told her I've been using a plain old timer since before smartphones were a thing. She's 22 and genuinely couldn't understand why someone would pick a beeping box over a shiny colored circle on a screen. It got me thinking about how much we've overcomplicated something so simple. Has anyone else found that the old school method of just setting a timer and putting the phone across the room works better than any fancy app?

My buddy Dave actually ran into this exact thing last week. He was over helping me clean the garage and I pulled out my old school wind up timer from the 80s that still works. He laughed and pulled out his phone to show me some app with badges and a little fire emoji for streaks. I asked him how long he'd been using it and he admitted he kept forgetting to start it because he'd get distracted by notifications. The next day he texted me a photo of a cheap analog timer he bought at the dollar store. Said he already got more cleaning done in one morning than he did all week with the app. Sometimes you just need a box that goes ding.
