A guy at the laundromat on 5th showed me his flip phone and I felt weirdly jealous
I was sitting there last Tuesday waiting on a wash cycle and this older guy next to me pulled out a flip phone, just a plain silver one with actual buttons. I asked if it was a hassle and he laughed and said he keeps a little notebook in his pocket for anything he needs to remember, and that he checks it twice a day on purpose. He told me he used to lose two hours a night to his smartphone and now it just sits in a drawer at home. I asked how long he'd been doing it and he said about 14 months, and that the quiet got weird at first but he likes it now. I keep thinking about that notebook thing, since my blocker apps only cover the phone and not the part of me that wants to peek. Has anyone here gone the other way and just dropped the smartphone altogether, or is that too far?
Dropping the phone totally is a lot, but the notebook idea is the real trick there. Writing stuff down by hand forces you to slow down, and checking it twice a day gives your brain actual rest. My phone stays in a drawer on Sundays now and the first hour is always rough. After that I don't even miss it.
