Everyone says bail early on a bad blind date, but I sat through 2 hours of silence at a diner in Sacramento and I'd do it again
My date showed up 25 minutes late to a diner off Capitol Ave, barely talked, and checked her phone under the table the whole time. Every friend I texted from the bathroom told me to fake an emergency and leave, and I almost did. Instead I stayed, paid for her $14 waffles, and walked her to her car, and two days later she sent me a long message apologizing because her mom had gone into the hospital that morning and she didn't know how to say it. We never went out again, but that message was worth more than the 2 hours I lost. Am I crazy for thinking bailing early is overrated, or has anyone else had a rough date turn out to have a real reason behind it?
Bailing early is the smart move way more often than your story suggests, you just happened to hit the one in a hundred case where the person had a real reason. For every rough date with a sick mom behind it, there are fifty where the person is just rude, boring, or on their phone because they don't care, and sitting there for two hours teaches you nothing except that you'll take disrespect. Your one good outcome is not proof that staying is right, it's just proof that you got lucky, and most people don't.
