Wasted $80 on a fancy gallery wall layout kit

I bought one of those pre-made layout templates with the little paper circles for spacing, thinking it would be foolproof. Got it all set up, hung six frames, and realized the spacing looked totally off because my wall is 8 feet wide and the kit assumes 10 feet. Anyone else wing it with just a measuring tape and save the cash?

My brother once spent a whole weekend measuring out a grid for his living room wall using a laser level and a spreadsheet. He had it all mapped out perfectly on paper, but forgot to account for the baseboard heater sticking out from the bottom. So all his frames ended up tilted forward like they were trying to bow to each other. We still joke about his "leaning tower of picture frames" every time we visit. Your mileage may vary, but sometimes the simple tape measure method leaves a lot less room for expensive surprises.

Wait, wouldn't the laser level still be level if they adjusted for the baseboard depth, or am I missing something? Tbh @elizabethhart, I feel like the real issue was skipping the mockup, not the laser itself. A quick test with cardboard first wouldve caught that heater problem before any frames went up.
