The gallery wall at my sister's wedding changed my mind about empty corners

I used to think every bare wall needed something big and loud, but last June I helped set up her reception at a hall in Columbus and they had this tiny corner with nothing but a single stool and a small framed postcard. Everyone kept stopping there to chat instead of near the big flower displays, and that made me realize empty space can guide people's attention better than art can. Now I leave the awkward 2 foot gap above my hallway radiator totally bare, and my friends actually compliment how open it feels. Has anyone else found that a random blank spot pulls more focus than the stuff you hang nearby?

Wait, but is that tiny corner working because it's EMPTY, or because it's the only quiet spot in the whole room? Like, put that stool and postcard next to the giant flower wall and see if anyone stops there. I had a similar thing with a weird gap between my bookshelf and the window, left it bare for a year, and it just looked unfinished until I threw a cheap plant on the floor there. So what exactly made that corner pull people in at the wedding, the lack of stuff or the fact it was OFF to the side from everything loud?
