Gallery wall overkill cost me a weekend and $80 in returns

Last month I grabbed 6 frames for a empty hallway wall, mixed sizes from Target and a thrift store in Portland. Total came to about $80 with hardware. By the time I measured twice, hung four, and stepped back, it looked like a cluttered mess, not a curated look. I returned two frames and went with a single oversized piece instead. That one frame cost $45 and took ten minutes to hang. Now I wonder if anyone else has found that less stuff on a wall actually makes the room feel bigger. What saved you time and money on a tricky blank space?
