Empty frame vs. no frame, which wall looks worse to you?

I was skeptical of those leaning ladder shelves for months, thought they'd just collect dust and look cluttered, but my neighbor in Boise put one up with 9 small plants and it actually made her boring hallway feel intentional somehow. Then I tried the same trick on my own wall above the radiator and it looked like a yard sale, so I ripped it down and now I'm staring at a blank space again wondering if bare is truly better. For you guys, is an empty wall with visible anchor holes worse than a wall with no holes but zero character, or am I overthinking the whole thing?
