Debate: Should wall art match your furniture or stand out as its own thing?

My neighbor Deb spent 20 minutes convincing me that my living room rug should dictate the color palette for my blank wall... I was standing in her house staring at a giant canvas that perfectly matched her beige couch. It looked coordinated but kinda boring to me. I told her I'm leaning toward a bright abstract piece that clashes with everything. Which side do you fall on... matchy-matchy or total contrast?

My friend Kate used to swear by matching everything to her grey couch and after seeing her place I was sold on the look. Then I went to her brother’s apartment where he had a neon pink splatter painting against navy walls and it totally changed my mind. I’m all for contrast now because a room that shocks you a little feels way more alive than one that just fades together.
