Why does everyone draw out stock with the hammer face instead of the peen?

I was at a hammer-in last weekend down in Springfield watching a guy stretch a piece of 1/2 round into a leaf and he was just wailing on it with the flat face of his hammer. Took him like 20 minutes and the metal barely moved. I showed him how to use the cross peen to move the steel faster and he looked at me like I was speaking alien. Is this just something nobody teaches anymore or what? I learned from an old timer who would smack me upside the head if I grabbed the hammer wrong. Has anyone else noticed beginners only using the flat face?

You ever watch a guy try to drive a nail with a wrench? Same thing.
