Warning: Stop quenching 1084 in motor oil, my first blade finally survived a bend test
I kept reading guys on here saying motor oil is fine for 1084, so that's what I used for my first 6 knives, and every one of them came out of the quench with a warped edge or a crack. Last week I switched to warm canola oil heated to about 130 degrees and my 8 inch chopper passed a 90 degree bend test without snapping, which felt like a small win after a year of ruining steel. Am I the only one who thinks the motor oil advice floating around is just leftover from guys quenching leaf springs, or does it actually work for someone out there?
