Walked into my old shop last week and barely recognized the place

Went by my first shop in rural Ohio to grab a file I left there 3 years ago. Forge was gone, replaced with a CNC plasma table and some kind of hydraulic press I didn't even know how to turn on. Has anyone else seen the trade shift this fast, or am I just getting old?

Used to roll my eyes at guys complaining about CNC, but that place really did lose its soul.

The 25 year old Deckel manual mill I run at the shop actually works better than the 5 year old Haas we got last year. @ellis.felix I get why people say that about CNC but most of the time it's just nostalgia for a time they never lived through. Modern machines can hold a tolerance to within a hair all day long without breaking a sweat. You just have to know how to set up your tools and work with the machine instead of fighting it. Maybe the soul people miss is really just the skill gap between a good manual machinist and someone who learned CAM last week.
