Turned a wrench at that old forge in Williamsburg and spotted something wild

Was in Colonial Williamsburg last month and walked through the blacksmith shop there. The guy working the bellows had this super slow, steady rhythm. Not the fast pumping I see at every ren faire. Noticed he was getting way more consistent heat on the billet than I ever do. Asked him about it after his demo and he said he counts to 4 on each pump, no rushing. Tried it in my shop this weekend on a 3/8 inch round bar and my hammering felt way smoother. Anyone else pick up tricks from historical sites that actually work better than modern methods?

Wait, you're telling me that guy actually counts out loud while he works the bellows? That's wild.
