Stick welder vs mig for a farm gate repair? I went with stick.
Had a 15 year old gate hinge snap clean off and everyone said grab a mig, but I didnt want to lug a gas bottle out in the mud. Stuck it with 6013 rods and that hinge hasnt budged through two blizzards, anyone else find stick just works better for rusty outdoor junk?

Two blizzards? Thats crazy talk. Ive had my gate hinge freeze solid more times than I can count and a stick weld is the only thing thats held up to that kind of abuse. 6013 rods are my go to for rusty junk too, they just bite in way better than mig wire on anything painted or pitted. I tried mig once on a old plow blade and it just sputtered and popped like it was angry at me. Stick might be slower but its way more forgiving when you cant get the surface perfectly clean. You made the right call sticking with that hinge.

Yeah, I read somewhere that 6013 rods handle dirty metal way better than mig wire cause the flux burns off the junk first.
