Quenched a blade in my own sweat bucket, literally

Last week I was shaping a 1084 blade on the forge at my shop in Tulsa. It was about 95 out and I had a bucket of water by the anvil, not for quenching, just for cooling my tongs off. I got the steel to non-magnetic, went to plunge it in my oil tank, and my foot caught the bucket. Water went everywhere, including all over the steel. It hardened uneven and actually cracked near the tang. Cost me 6 hours of work. I know, dumb move. Has anyone else ever mixed up their cooling water with their quench oil and ruined a piece? How do you keep that from happening in a cramped shop?
