PSA: That fancy forge welding flux I bought was a total waste
I paid $45 for a specialty flux powder from a big name supplier because I thought it would make my forge welds way easier. After three tries with it I was getting terrible results and lots of scale. My mentor saw what I was using and just said "borax works fine, kid." He was right, I switched back to plain borax from the grocery store and my welds came out clean on the first try. Has anyone else had fancy supplies let them down like that?

Respectfully, I see it a bit different though. Sometimes the fancy flux helps with certain alloys or weird temperatures where borax just won't cut it (assuming you're working with stainless or something tricky). Maybe the issue was technique rather than the flux itself, since your mentor made it sound like a simple fix.
