Picked up a trick at the Austin hammer-in that saved my anvil stand

Watched a guy weld angle iron frames filled with sand for his anvil at the Texas show last weekend, tried it myself and my ringing dropped by half, has anyone else messed with sand-filled stands?

I filled a 4x4 frame with play sand from Home Depot and it cut the ring way more than I expected. Cost me maybe 12 bucks and an afternoon of welding. No more earplugs needed in the shop.

Hang on @the_dylan, I bet that sand just soaked up the high frequencies but left the low end rumbling worse than before. Now you can't hear the ring but your ears are still getting hammered by the bass, right? Seems like a band-aid fix to me.
