Old timer at the forge swap meet gave me a reality check
I was at the Colorado Blacksmithing Association meet last month, jawing about my new gas forge, when this guy in his 70s just handed me a rusty coal forge and said 'try this for 3 months.' I spent my first weekend with it and burned through 20 pounds of coal before I got a single weld to stick. Has anyone else had an old-school smith show you something that made you rethink your whole setup?

Coal forges are a different beast entirely.

Swallowed my pride real quick the first time I tried a coal forge. I spent a whole afternoon trying to get a fire started and ended up with a face full of black soot and a pile of useless cinders. My neighbor's dog still won't look me in the eye after I yelled at it for walking past my shop that day. That rusty coal forge is a humbling teacher for sure, makes you realize how much the gas forge was doing for you.
