I was at the big hammer-in near Toledo last month and saw a guy's anvil stand give out.
He was working on a big piece, maybe a 3 pound hammer head, and we all heard this loud crack. The whole wooden stand just split right down the middle. The anvil tipped and his hot steel went flying, luckily into the dirt. I built my stand with 6x6 timbers, but now I'm adding a steel band around the middle for sure. What's the best way you've found to really lock an anvil down?

My first stand was a couple of cinder blocks and a prayer. Bolting it to a big stump was a total game changer for me. The weight and the wide base just soak up all that hammer shock.

Bolting to a stump is the way to go. I soaked mine in used motor oil for a few months to keep it from splitting, then lag bolted the anvil right through the feet into the wood. That thing doesn't move a millimeter, even with heavy drawing work.
