Hot take: quench tanks should be wide not deep

I used to forge with a skinny 5 gallon bucket for quenching, maybe 10 inches wide. Always had to wiggle the piece in there and it cooled uneven, left hard spots. Last month I swapped to a wide 15 gallon tub, only like 12 inches deep but 2 feet across. Now I can drop a 3 foot blade in flat and it cools even every time. Has anyone else found that quench tank shape matters more than oil type?

Switched from a narrow 6 inch pipe to a 24 inch wide pan last year. No more wrestling with the steel or worrying about steam jacket issues.

Guess you haven't heard about steam jackets then, they matter way more than width.
