Heard a guy at the supply house say he anneals by throwing hot steel in the snow

I was picking up rod stock at Midlands Steel Supply last Friday and some dude told me he "quenches to anneal" by tossing cherry red steel into a snowbank. My whole crew just stopped and looked at each other. Has anyone else ever heard of anyone trying that instead of a proper cool down in the forge?

Well damn, that's a new one. Bet his steel's softer than butter left out.

That softer than butter line got me thinking. My buddy tried one of those cheap swords last summer and it bent on a plastic water jug. Guess that makes your point for you, @the_vera.
