Can we talk about forge welding failures I had a bad one last Tuesday

I was working on a fire poker in my shop near Columbus, Ohio, and the weld just let go after I thought I had it solid. The joint had good heat and I used fresh flux, but when I hammered it, the seam split right open. I spent another hour preheating everything slower and it held fine the second try. Has anyone else found that rushing the heat on a weld ruins it more often than not?

Respectfully disagree @seth_allen, speed's never been my issue with forge welds.

Coming from a guy who learned the hard way, slowing down the heat soak makes all the difference. I started bringing my pieces up to temp over two or three cycles and letting them sit in the fire a bit longer. Haven't had a weld let go since I made that change.
