Can we talk about coal forges vs gas forges for a beginner in a small shop?
I started out 3 years ago with a $150 gas forge I bought used off a guy in Tulsa, and it was fine for basic stuff but I never really understood heat control until I borrowed a buddy's coal forge for a weekend. The difference was night and day. With coal I could watch the fire and see exactly where the hot spot was, and I could pull the work back to let it cool slow without losing the whole heat. Gas is faster and cleaner for sure, but I feel like I skipped a whole chapter of learning by starting with it. Any of you run both, and which one would you hand a brand new guy today?
