A judge at the county fair told me my hammer control was too stiff
He said I was holding the handle like a club, not a tool, and it was making my work look forced. I started practicing with a lighter 2.5 pound cross peen for an hour every morning, focusing on letting the hammer fall more than swing. My scrolls got way smoother after about two weeks. Anyone else get a piece of advice that totally changed your hammer technique?

Watched my buddy get roasted for "arm swinging" like he was chopping wood. An old timer told him to pretend his elbow was a hinge and just let the weight drop. His riveting got way cleaner and he stopped being so tired after a shift.

That hinge advice is solid, but what about the other arm? I've seen guys lock up their off hand so tight it looks like they're trying to strangle the gun. Did the old timer say anything about keeping that side loose, or is it just about the hammer arm?
