My buddy swore I had to watch Dark on Netflix in German with subtitles, not the English dub

So my friend Mike kept hounding me for months. He said the English dub ruins the whole vibe because the voice actors sound flat and the lip sync is off. I finally caved last weekend and started it in German with subtitles. Man, he was totally right. The first episode had this creepy atmosphere that just felt way more real. I tried switching to English for one scene and it felt like a bad cartoon. Has anyone else noticed a huge difference between dubs and subs on foreign shows?

Ngl I had the exact same thing happen with Narcos. My roommate begged me to watch it in Spanish with subs and I was like whatever dude that sounds like work. But then I tried it and the English dub made Escobar sound like a boring businessman. In Spanish his voice had this rough edge to it that made him seem way more dangerous. The lip sync thing drove me crazy too, like watching a cheap kung fu movie from the 70s. Now I won't touch a foreign show without the original audio.

Honestly yeah the lip sync thing is what gets me every time. I tried watching Dark on Netflix with the English dub and gave up after ten minutes because everybody's mouth was moving all wrong. It was like my brain couldn't focus on the story because it was too busy noticing how the words didn't match the faces. Plus you lose so much of the acting when you can't hear the actual emotion in someone's voice. Subtitles are the way to go, even if you have to read a little faster.
