I watched my mom's 4pm soap opera for 6 months instead of streaming and now I can't go back
My mom has watched the same soap every weekday at 4pm for like 30 years and I always thought it was silly. When I moved back in with her for 6 months to save money I started sitting down and watching it with her, mostly just to have something to do. What surprised me is how much I got hooked on the slow build, one story playing out over weeks instead of dropping all at once. I realized I stopped binge watching anything else because there was no pressure to finish it, it just showed up every day. My Netflix queue went from 40 shows to basically nothing. Now I'm wondering if anyone else has gone back to watching stuff the old way, one episode at a time, and liked it more?
Watched my grandma do the same thing with her stories every afternoon when I was a kid and I never got it until I got older. She'd tape them on VHS if she had to run errands, which felt so extra to me at the time. Years later I found myself doing the exact same thing with a radio show that came on at the same time every night, and something about knowing it would be there tomorrow made it feel less like a race. The whole binge thing wears me out honestly, like homework I'll never finish. Having a show that just shows up and then goes away feels way more relaxing.
