Used to hate the new separated bike lanes downtown... now I get it

Honestly, I was one of those people complaining when they put in those curbed lanes on Main Street last year. I ride an old road bike and kept thinking they'd trap me behind slow cruisers. Then I got hit by a car door on 3rd Ave in April and spent 6 weeks on a bus. Now I take the separated lane every time, even if it adds 5 minutes. Anyone else get converted after a close call?

Close calls change your whole mindset real quick. Car doors are no joke, one of my buddies is still dealing with shoulder problems from getting doored like three years ago. Those separated lanes feel annoying at first because they mess with your usual flow, but once you realize they basically eliminate the two biggest threats (doors and people swerving into the bike lane) it's hard to go back. Downtown is honestly more relaxed now too since you're not constantly scanning every parked car for a hand on a door handle.
