I thought the bike lane on Grand Ave was a waste of money until last Tuesday
I used to roll my eyes at the Grand Ave bike lane every time I drove it, just seemed like empty green paint to me. Then last Tuesday my car died and I had to bike to work for the first time in maybe 5 years. That lane got me 2 miles across town in 11 minutes while the cars sat still at every light. I've never felt safer biking in this city, honestly. Now I'm wondering what other streets could use the same treatment, does anyone know if the city has plans for more of these?
Grand Ave is a perfect example of how we judge stuff we never actually use, and I catch myself doing it with everything from bus routes to those little library boxes. You don't notice how much something helps until you're the one who needs it, then suddenly you're the loudest person at the meeting. So yeah, I'd show up to a city council meeting and ask about more lanes, because that's usually the only way these things actually get built.
