Frozen bike lane nearly ate my wheel, two days to sort the mess

Hit a patch of black ice on the Harrison Ave lane last Tuesday, the one under the overpass that never gets sun. My front wheel slid sideways into the curb, bent the rim and snapped a spoke, so I had to walk the bike a mile to the shop. They quoted me two days for the rebuild, but it took four because the spoke size was backordered. Anyone else had a crash in a lane that the city just never salts? I'm thinking of switching to studded tires before next November.
