Found out my city counts a painted line next to parked cars as a 'protected lane' and I'm still mad about it
I pulled up the city's bike plan PDF last Tuesday after a driver doored me on 4th Street, and there it was in the fine print: 38 of the 60 miles they call "protected" are just paint with parked cars on the other side. That's 63 percent of the whole network, and they count it as safe infrastructure for the map. I ride that stretch every morning and it's a door zone the entire way, no posts, no curb, nothing between me and a car door. The planner's exact words in the report were "low stress connectivity" and I laughed out loud in my kitchen. So now the city gets to point at a number and say look how much we built while I'm still dodging side mirrors. Has anyone actually gotten their city to stop counting paint as protection, and if so how?
