Can we talk about how the new bike lane on Franklin is actually worse for cyclists than the old road was?
Everyone in this group keeps cheering for the protected lane they put in on Franklin last month, and I think you are all wrong about it. I ride that stretch twice a day, and since it opened I have had 3 close calls with cars turning right because the lane puts you in their blind zone at the driveway by the laundromat. The old setup let me take the lane and be seen, now I get squeezed into a 4 foot strip with parked cars opening doors. Last Tuesday a guy in a Silverado cut me off so bad I had to slam into the curb and bent my front wheel. I called the city and the guy basically told me the lane meets the minimum standard so there is nothing to fix. Am I the only one who feels less safe in this thing, and has anyone actually gotten a response from public works about a bad design?
Feels like the same story everywhere: city checks a box on a bike plan and calls it done, then riders get stuck testing the design with their bodies. Between the wheel and the runaround from public works, seems like the fix only happens after someone gets hurt.
