Watched a guy load his bike with 4 grocery bags last night without breaking a sweat

I was at the Whole Foods on 7th Ave around 6 PM. This dude rolls up with a Surly Long Haul Trucker and straps four full bags onto his rear rack with some kind of bungee net thing. No panniers. He did it in under two minutes and pedaled off like it was nothing. I'm still trying to figure out how to carry a 6 pack without it falling off my handlebars. Anyone got a simple setup that works for grocery runs without spending $100 on fancy bags?

Four bags with just a bungee net? That guy either had a death wish or a physics degree... I tried that once and my milk ended up rolling down the street like a runaway bowling ball. The real trick is finding those cheap wire crate baskets at garage sales or thrift stores - they bolt right onto most racks and you can just toss bags in there without any fancy clips. Or just do what I do and use a cardboard box strapped to the back like a total weirdo... works great until it rains.

That Surly guy probably had his load balanced perfectly, but I bet the bungee net setup was the real MVP. Did he have anything on the front, or was it all just back there?
