Two bike bags tested for 3 weeks, the cheap one won me over

I ride 7 miles each way to my lab job in Portland, and I used to carry a backpack until my back gave out. So I bought a $60 pannier from a big brand and a $25 no-name one from Amazon to compare. The expensive one was waterproof but stiff as cardboard, and the cheap one has a simple roll top that was easier to get into with gloves on. After 15 rides in rain and sun, the cheap bag kept my lunch dry and clipped on way faster. The expensive one had a weird magnetic clip that slipped off my rack twice on bumpy roads. Anyone else find that cheaper gear sometimes just fits your routine better?

I gotta push back on the "cheap one won me over" thing. You say the expensive bag was stiff as cardboard, but that stiffness is what kept my laptop dry when I got caught in a proper downpour last month. Roll tops leak at the seam when you don't roll them perfectly tight, and I've seen cheap bags sag into the wheel after a few months of heavy loads. That magnetic clip slipping off twice sounds annoying, sure, but I'd trade that for the way the cheap one's buckles started cracking in the cold. Fifteen rides is nothing, man. Give it six months of daily use and see if the $25 bag still clips on "way faster" when the plastic gets brittle and the stitching pulls.
