That $90 rain jacket was a rip off, here's what happened
I bought a fancy breathable rain jacket for my 12 mile commute through Seattle's drizzle, thinking it would keep me dry without turning into a sauna. Three weeks in, the seams started leaking at the shoulders and the fabric soaked through by mile 8, so I showed up to a client meeting looking like a drowned rat. Does anyone else swear by the cheap poncho plus merino base layer combo instead, or am I missing a better middle ground?

Dang, that sucks. I saw something recently about how those high end breathable jackets are kinda overhyped because the DWR coating wears off way faster than people expect. Once that happens the whole fabric just gets wet and heavy. The poncho plus merino setup does work, but honestly I think the real sweet spot is a waxed canvas jacket or a basic shell with a decent pit zip. Waterproofing is a lie after a season, so you gotta build your system around that reality.
