Switched from a backpack to panniers, my back finally forgives me

After 4 months of hauling a laptop and lunch in an old backpack, my shoulders ached every morning before I even got to the office. I picked up a used pair of Ortlieb panniers last week for $60 and now the bike feels way more balanced, plus no more sweaty back patch on my shirt. Anyone else make the swap and find they ride slower but actually feel less tired at work?

Panniers are the best decision I ever made for commuting. Same thing happened to me, the backpack was wrecking my shoulders by Wednesday every week, and now I just toss the laptop in the left bag and my lunch in the right. The bike feels so much more stable too, especially when I lean into turns, and I don't have to brace myself every time I hit a pothole. You're right about speed, I never push as hard now because the weight sits low instead of on my back. But I get to work without that stiff neck and my shirt stays dry, which honestly matters more than saving five minutes. Best part is I can grab the bags and carry them inside like groceries, no more wrestling a sticky backpack off one shoulder at the office.
