PSA: I swapped my backpack for a rack bag and my back went from soaked to almost dry in two weeks
Two weeks ago I was showing up to my desk in Chicago with a wet shirt down the whole middle of my back and I just accepted it as normal. My commute is 6.5 miles and I was wearing a regular backpack with a laptop, lunch, and a change of shirt crammed in it. On a whim I moved everything into a rack bag that sits on the rear rack instead, so nothing is pressed against my spine anymore. The first morning I got in and my shirt was actually dry across the back, which sounds small but it changed my whole morning. Air moves around your back when nothing is strapped to it, that is the whole trick. I still sweat a bit on the climb but it is nothing like before. Anyone else make this switch and notice a bigger gap on hot days, or is it mostly about how much you are carrying?
My buddy Dave did this on his Milwaukee commute, about 8 miles, and said the same thing. He still shows up a little damp if he's hauling a full change of clothes plus his lunch, but the whole strip down his spine stays dry now. Hot days it's a way bigger deal than the extra weight, in his words.
