My rear rack bolt snapped mid-commute in Austin traffic
Was hauling my laptop bag on the rack last Tuesday when the bolt just sheared off going over a pothole on Lamar. The bag swung into the wheel and nearly sent me over the bars. I keep a spare M5 bolt and allen key in my seat bag now, costs about 80 cents, takes 2 minutes to fix. Anyone else had rack hardware fail on them at the worst possible time?

Bet that pothole on Lamar had nothing to do with it and the bolt was just old and stretched from day one. Losing a rack bag is annoying but it beats blowing out a fork or a wheel, and most of those rack bolts never see a torque wrench anyway. Maybe the real fix is checking your hardware every few months instead of waiting for it to fail in traffic.
