Visited a co-op shop in Portland last month and saw a mechanic using cutting fluid on every single chain install.
Some swear it reduces stretch and rust over time, while others say it just attracts dirt and makes a mess out of your drivetrain faster, so which camp is actually right based on your shop experience?

Yeah some swear it reduces stretch" - I've been that guy with the oil can. Actually splashed a little too much cutting fluid on a chain last month and it flung all over my white jeans. Looked like I got attacked by a greasy ghost. Lesson learned - just use a tiny drop on the pin, not a whole puddle.

Funny how you gotta learn that the hard way though. That's the thing about life, most people just jump in with too much of something at first. Whether it's cutting fluid on a chain or salt in a soup, the urge to overdo it is real. Seems like everyone has to make that mess once before they figure out the right amount. It's like a universal rule of anything hands-on, you always start with way too much and then work your way back.
