Vent: That guy at the co-op who insisted old Campagnolo parts never need grease
Last Tuesday at the Bike Kitchen in Portland, this older mechanic kept interrupting my overhaul to say I was ruining a 1980s Super Record rear derailleur by adding Phil Wood grease. He claimed the original owner never greased it and it still shifted fine for 30 years. I told him dry pivots are why those get sticky, but he just walked away. Are you a die-hard OEM purist or do you believe in a little fresh lube on vintage stuff?

Ruining it by adding Phil Wood grease" - that kills me. I once had a guy at a swap tell me I was destroying the patina on a 90s XT derailleur by wiping the dirt off. I figure if the parts are gonna outlive me anyway, they can handle a little grease. My own bike shifts like a cow on ice because I probably used too much, but at least it's not dry.
