Update: told a customer his chain was stretched, he pulled out a ruler to prove me wrong
He measured link to link and got 12 inches on the dot, then I showed him 12 pins across a brand new chain sitting at 11 and 15/16. Anyone else keep a known good chain hanging on the wall just for moments like this?

12 inches means nothing, wear happens between pins too.
