Unpopular opinion: Letting neighbors use your bike pump is a bad idea

My neighbor borrowed my floor pump and returned it with a broken gauge. Now I can't check tire pressure right before rides. How do you handle friends who ruin your tools?

Oh man, that sucks. My buddy Mark had the same thing happen with his torque wrench. He lent it to his neighbor and the guy overtorqued a bolt so bad the wrench never clicked the same again. Mark was super careful with that thing, kept it in the case and everything. Now he just tells people sorry, not sorry, and points them to the gas station air pump down the street. It feels awkward at first but he said it beats the resentment that builds up when your stuff comes back busted. Have you tried just being straight up and saying your pump is off limits now?

Honestly, I get where you're coming from, but my experience is different. I lent my floor pump to my neighbor last month and he actually fixed a loose valve on it for me. If you set clear rules, like don't force the gauge, it usually works out. Tools are meant to be used, and sharing builds good relationships. Sure, there's risk, but I'd take a broken gauge over a strained friendship any day.

Stuff just gets broken sometimes. Maybe keep a cheap pump for lending. Or only loan to the one friend who actually fixes bikes.
